CET’s Green Business Services helps businesses and institutions benefit by improving environmental performance and their bottom line. Recently we’ve been working with Daggett Gymnastics to help them save money on their energy costs.
Daggett Gymnastics operates in an 18,000 square foot, 21-year-old building and provides gymnastics programs for nearly 800 children every week. In addition to monthly savings on their natural gas and electric bills, Daggett Gymnastics has realized significant improvements in comfort and building performance.
“This is a high level gymnastics training center with nationally ranked athletes. The improvements have produced temperature uniformity in our space which is the best possible scenario for an elite level athlete,” said owner and Olympic gold medal winner Tim Daggett.
Energy Efficiency Opportunities Identified by CET
- Lighting
- HVAC
- Building envelope
Lighting
Because Daggett Gymnastics is an athletic facility, they needed quality lights for safety reasons. CET worked with Western Mass Electric to spec the lighting equipment ensuring that it was both bright and efficient.
Project Cost: $14,000
Incentive Paid: $4,000
Est. Annual Savings: $2,000
Customer Payback: 5 years
Building Envelope
The gym had poorly performing single-pane windows and an overhead door that was not insulated. CET helped Daggett Gymnastics take advantage of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts’ small business custom program to achieve a savings of 295 therms per year.
Project Cost: $2,700
Incentive Paid: $900
Est. Annual Savings: Approximately 8% of annual natural gas usage
HVAC
The facility did not have air conditioning prior to 2012. CET provided consultation in partnership with the HVAV contractor to select a new HVAC system that provides both heating and cooling. The unit qualified for rebates for high efficiency air conditioning.
Prescriptive Rebate: $1,200
Est. Annual Electric Savings: 4800 kWh
“Being an environmentally conscious person, I wanted to be sure that Daggett Gymnastics was a good partner for the environment. Being a business person, it had to work financially, and not only in the short term, but in the long term as well.” – Tim Daggett
